Driverless Buses on the Way to the UK
Driverless buses are going to be the next buzz in the market as indicated by UK government officials. The first automated services have already been discussed in the UK. Officials have also stated that the buses without drivers would be more helpful in rural areas and give better and more frequent services. Besides that, any issues and concerns are already being worked upon so that the vehicles can be prevented from being rolled out in the middle of the roads. For one, as there is no driver what happens if the bus hits something? Will it have a motor trade insurance policy still? Who is liable? Questions which are being raised right now in time for the 2015 roll-out.
Impact on the cost
Transport officials have come out with reasons as to why there is a need to introduce buses without drivers. It will cut the cost to hire the drivers in rural areas. The aim of these types of buses is to improve the transportation in these areas and offer better quality of life to rural people. Once the officials are done with the regulatory related issues, the first driverless bus would be on the road in the United Kingdom. One of the reputed transport companies has already shown its interest in this service. The company name has been kept under wraps for now.
Driverless bus trials
It has also been stated that the trials of these buses would be done in three cities initially, mainly in the coming year and also the Highway Code will be changed. In order to determine the location and various routes around the UK, GPS system will be integrated. However, as per the law, one driver would be required to be seated in the bus throughout the journey.
Are they easy to believe?
Even the officials themselves feel that these sci-fi cars and vehicles create a sense of fear in some people; these buses are going to be on the roads. Despite of the fact that, cyclists, travellers and car drivers may not feel that they are secure travelling on the bus, people have shown their interest in knowing how and when they are going to be launched. However, if we look at the advancement prospective, we shouldn’t ignore driverless technology because it will take the world to the next level for transportation – you only have to look at what Google is dong. To gain more input, the government would be launching the trials along with the feedback of how users feel about them on the roads. It will help them understand how everyday people react to this technology advancement.
The future of transportation does indeed look bright using driverless buses and cars. However, it is too early to say how they will effect us now. We will have to wait a little longer and be patient to know how they can contribute to people’s daily lives, so watch this space!
