Best new cars to lower car insurance for young drivers

We’re an insurance company, and we love younger drivers, but we also understand that younger drivers are often much more expensive to insure than older drivers. The reasons are varied, and whilst we may be able to quote you much more competitive car insurance for young drivers, insurance is still a big concern for younger drivers. So what cars are good for avoiding eye-watering premiums, yet are still fun to drive?

Think about insurance groups

We get it, when you’ve finally ditched those “L” plates, you don’t want to drive an old, slow banger. You want a new, fast, and loud car.

The reality is that car insurance for young drivers is affected by a number of factors, but a big factor is the type and model of car you drive. Insurance companies tend to class vehicles into groups, going typically from 1-20. A group 1 rating is the lowest group, and therefore the cheapest type of car to insure. Group 20 is the highest group, and the most expensive to insure.

It doesn’t take much to realise that choosing a car with a lower group will lower your premiums. So the first thing to think about is choosing a car with a low insurance group, ideally in group 1. Yet whilst group 1 cars have historically been considered boring, slow and lacking in personality, manufacturers have worked hard to make these cars, fun, exciting and good to drive. Here’s our pick of the top 3 cars in group 1 right now.

Volkswagen Up!

Volkswagen Up by 50to70.com

This fun, funky car which is equally at home on the city streets as it is on motorways. What Volkswagen have achieved here, is a car which does it all, but retains that young, and fun-to-drive attitude of small cars. The combination of being light and small also make this car agile, and importantly for younger drivers-easy to park. It’s a great car to lower the costs of car insurance for young drivers.

Seat Mii

Outside it’s a Seat, but underneath the Spanish exterior is the tell-tale hallmarks of a German. A Volkswagen, specifically. Based on the Up!, it shares a number of characteristics of the German marque’s best-selling city model, being light, agile and fun to drive. Importantly for loweringt the costs of car insurance for younger drivers, every trim level is in group 1 bar one-the sport version. Being it’s a Seat and not a Volkswagen too, you’ll save a few quid buying it.

Vauxhall Corsa

Disclaimer: This car isn’t really a group 1 car. It’s group 2. However, this car is such a classic for younger drivers, it’s hard not to put it in the list. Whilst maybe not as inspiring or fun to drive as other small cars, it comes with many features you’d expect on a much larger, and more expensive car. With an edgy design and a decent interior, the overall package is hard to beat. Despite most versions being in group 2, the increase in premiums will be minimal. It’s still a great choice for lowering the cost of car insurance for young drivers.
