Could drivers like these be increasing your car insurance premiums?
Recently, a freedom of information request by the IAM revealed drivers who have been caught driving at excessive speeds in 2014.
Their results provide sobering reading, detailing one driver who was caught driving at 128mph in a 30mph limit. That’s over 4 times the speed limit, in an urban area.
Britain’s worst speeding offence was recorded just past Junction 5 of the M25, near to Clackett Lane services. The offender was caught driving at 146mph, more than double the motorway speed limit. At 140mph, a driver is covering nearly two and a half miles per minute, meaning that reaction speeds are significantly diminished, leaving little or no reaction time.
The risks to other road users, and the drivers themselves are obvious, with the risk of a serious accident rising as speed increases. In urban areas this is even more acute, with more corners, significant differences in gradients and road quality, as well as street furniture, and pedestrians.
The consequence of excessive speed is often accidents, and they are usually severe. The consequences of these events are many, and often far-reaching. The cost you pay for your car insurance is often indelibly linked to these accidents, as insurers try to recover their costs across their entire customer base.
Whilst we at Insurance Factory love exotic and sporty cars, we also try to find the most competitive car insurance premiums for safe, responsible and reformed drivers. So take care, stick to the speed limits, and reserve high speeds for the racing track.
